Keolis Awarded VRE Competitive Procurement

Following a competitive procurement process, Keolis will continue its 15-year partnership with Virginia Railway Express (VRE) to operate and maintain the commuter rail service. Keolis will maintain operations for 32 weekday trains with a rolling stock of 20 diesel locomotives and 100 passenger cars. The fleet will be operated by more than 100 Keolis employees, performing equipment, facilities, and lifecycle maintenance.

Keolis’s results for VRE include adjusted on-time performance exceeding 99 percent. It has a long-standing record of safety with no VRE train accidents and multiple work units achieving a decade or more of injury free service. Since 2015, Keolis has maintained ISO 9001 certification at VRE, which reflects continuous improvement toward the highest quality and safety standards.

The new contract for Keolis and VRE will commence July 2026, with the potential to expand to 15 years.
