Tri-Rail to Update Fleet with Siemens-Built Locomotives
1/23/2026

South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) announced the addition of seven new locomotives to its Tri-Rail fleet. The Charger locomotives will be built at the Siemens Mobility rail manufacturing hub in Sacramento, CA, which employs more than 2,500 workers.
Funded through FTA, the procurement complies with SFRTA’s operational needs and regulatory requirements. It reflects the industry’s efforts to foster energy independence, as the Charger is recognized as the diesel-electric locomotive with the lowest emissions in North America.
SFRTA Executive Director Dave Dech said, “This investment supports our long-term vision for safer, more efficient commuter rail system, and positions Tri-Rail for continued growth.”
The new trains are expected to enter service in 2029, making it possible for SFRTA to replace older equipment and improve service quality for its growing number of customers. The commuter rail system, which links Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, reported record ridership in 2025.
