Laketran, Geauga Transit Advance Regional Workforce Mobility with New $2.3 Million Grant

Laketran and Geauga Transit are moving forward with a major expansion of regional mobility in northeast Ohio following the award of two Workforce Mobility Program (OWMP) grants from Ohio DOT—including a new $2 million award aimed at strengthening job access across Lake and Geauga counties.

The funding positions the two agencies to collaboratively design and implement new cross-county transportation options, with particular focus on improving connections for Amish residents and other transit-dependent populations in Geauga County. These communities often face limited mobility choices, making dependable regional transit essential for reaching jobs, training opportunities, and vital services.

“This is a very exciting opportunity, and I truly appreciate ODOT’s continued support of our vision for improving regional transportation between Lake and Geauga counties,” said Laketran CEO Ben Capelle. “This new award gives us the opportunity to explore cross-county transportation that connects residents to employment throughout the region. We’re excited to continue expanding mobility and economic opportunity for the communities we serve.”

Created through state legislation, Ohio’s Workforce Mobility Program uses federal transportation funds to support projects that directly reduce barriers to employment. In the current round, ODOT awarded approximately $13.5 million to transit agencies, nonprofits, and local governments working to close mobility gaps and enhance access to jobs and essential services.

“Transportation should never stand in the way of a good job. This investment will help more Ohioans get to work and support employers who need reliable, skilled workers,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.

Planning and community engagement for the cross-county service expansion will begin in 2026. Laketran and Geauga Transit will evaluate service alternatives, coordinate with employers, and outline an implementation timeline to bring new regional connectivity to residents across both counties.
