VIA Names Jon Gary Herrera as President and CEO

11/13/2024

VIA Metropolitan Transit, San Antonio, TX, has appointed Jon Gary Herrera as its new president and CEO, to succeed Jeffrey C. Arndt beginning Jan. 4, who is retiring after 40 years in the transportation industry and 13 years at VIA.

Herrera will be the first Latino to lead the state’s second-largest transit service area in VIA’s 46 years. He has served as senior vice president of public engagement since 2017, overseeing efforts including the historic 2020 initiative to secure additional funding for VIA’s Keep SA Moving plan.

In 2025, the agency will break ground on the region’s first Advanced Rapid Transit corridor, the VIA Rapid Green Line, connecting major job centers and neighborhoods from the San Antonio International Airport area, through Downtown, and to the neighborhood near San Antonio’s historic missions. A second VIA Rapid line, designed to connect the East and West sides, is set to begin construction in 2027.

For APTA, Arndt is a member of the Public Transportation CEO Coordinating Council and Safety Coordinating Council and serves on the Bus & Paratransit CEOs; Legislative; Bus Safety; and Innovative Funding, Finance, and P3 committees. Under Arndt’s leadership, VIA won APTA’s 2018 Innovation Award.
