New Flyer of America Inc. announces new firm orders from the Maryland Transit Administration for a total of 117 buses (127 equivalent units or EUs). These awards consist of:

  • 50 Xcelsior 40-foot hybrid-electric buses (50 EUs) and 20 Xcelsior CHARGE NG 40-foot battery-electric buses (20 EUs) awarded in the fourth quarter of 2024.
  • An additional 37 Xcelsior 40-foot hybrid-electric buses (37 EUs), and 10 Xcelsior CHARGE NG 60-foot battery-electric buses (20 EUs) awarded in the first quarter of 2025.

“NFI and its subsidiaries have delivered more than 1,200 buses to the agency over the past 30 years,” said Chris Stoddart, president, North American Bus and Coach, NFI. “The combination of hybrid and battery-electric buses offers a seamless implementation process, an opportunity to significantly reduce emissions in the short term, and a scalable pathway to achieving their sustainability goals. Additionally, all models are built on our proven Xcelsior platform and feature a high degree of commonality in parts and service operations, ensuring efficiency and reliability across their fleet.”

New Flyer also announces a major order from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) for 42 Xcelsior 40-foot hybrid buses. This order meets Buy America requirements supporting manufacturing jobs in the U.S. and is a part of New Flyer’s Q4 2024 backlog.

“In past the 10 years, New Flyer has delivered over 700 buses to SFMTA,” said Stoddart. “By replacing aging vehicles in their fleet, these next-generation hybrid buses will integrate cutting-edge technology to maximize efficiency, power, and performance—ensuring a more reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective transit system for the people of San Francisco.”

New Flyer Industries Canada ULC has been awarded a significant contract with York Region Transit (YRT) for 170 Xcelsior clean-diesel transit buses (268 equivalents units or EUs). This contract strengthens New Flyer’s position as a premier provider of sustainable mobility solutions and is part of the company’s Q4 2024 backlog.

The order includes 72 Xcelsior clean-diesel 40-foot buses (72 EUs) and 98 Xcelsior clean-diesel 60-foot buses (196 EUs). These buses will be delivered over the next three years and, in combination with the agency’s previous 2023 purchase of 75 Xcelsior CHARGE NG battery-electric buses, will enhance YRT’s service on both regular routes and the York Viva Bus Rapid Transit (vivaNext) rapid ways.

YRT’s 535-vehicle fleet is one of the largest bus fleets in Ontario, serving a population of more than 1.2 million people. With a robust transit network that connects all nine municipalities in the York Region, as well as the city of Toronto and the Peel and Durham regions, YRT plays a crucial role in regional mobility.

“New Flyer’s Xcelsior clean-diesel buses lead to improved efficiency and lower operating costs, and the new fleet is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing YRT’s vital mission of connecting communities across the York region,” said Stoddart. “Additionally, the buses will ensure a quiet, clean, and comfortable ride for commuters throughout the Greater Toronto Area.”

New Flyer Industries Canada ULC has also secured two firm orders from Durham Region Transit (DRT) for seven Xcelsior CHARGE NG 40-foot battery-electric buses and 36 Xcelsior 40-foot clean-diesel buses.

“Since 1988, New Flyer has been a trusted partner to DRT, delivering safe, reliable, and accessible public transit solutions for their communities,” said Stoddart. “This latest investment underscores our shared commitment to enhancing mobility and improving the passenger experience. Through continuous innovation and strategic investments—like expanding our Winnipeg facility to support an all-Canadian bus manufacturing initiative—New Flyer is strengthening Canada’s transit ecosystem for future generations.”

“These New Flyer buses will enhance the Durham Region Transit fleet to support our mission of delivering sustainable, efficient public transit services for the communities we serve,” said Bill Holmes, general manager at DRT.
